Everything he’s been through this season and because he’s been here so long and never been to the playoffs, he came in here and played good and scored a touchdown. It was the only time Andre Johnson hesitated all afternoon.
After scoring a 40-yard touchdown on a beautiful double-move on Cincinnati Bengals cornerback Adam Jones, Johnson paused before leaping into the arms of fans behind the end zone at Reliant Stadium.
“I really wasn’t going to jump into the stands because I knew the people weren’t going to let me down,” Johnson said. “I have jumped into the stands a few times here and I have been grabbed by the facemask and everything.”
The moment was a big relief for Johnson, the longest-tenured member of the team who struggled through hamstring injuries the majority of the regular season. He was antsy to make a play all game, and the reception eased his mind.
It also helped lift his team to a 31-10 playoff win.

Bengals rookie quarterback Andy Dalton’s success has been big news in the Houston area. He grew up in nearby Katy.

It will also be the first matchup of rookie quarterbacks in a playoff game since the NFL-AFL merger in 1970 as Dalton faces the Texans’ T.J. Yates.

CINCINNATI (AP) Eighty yards to cover, little more than 2 minutes left, no timeouts to help. Rookie quarterback T.J. Yates faced his biggest challenge as he lined up for the snap.

With savvy and a scramble, he pulled it off.

Yates led the biggest drive in Texans history on Sunday, one that put them in the end zone and the playoffs. He threw a 6-yard touchdown pass with 2 seconds left for a 20-19 victory over the Cincinnati Bengals that sent the expansion team into the playoffs for the first time.

"It's pretty crazy," Yates said. "A lot of people in this organization have waited a long time for this. This is a special day for this team and this organization."

In the span of a few wild minutes, everything broke their way.

With their seventh straight win, the Texans (10-3) moved to the threshold of the playoffs. They hugged on the field then headed to the locker room, where they huddled around a television set and watched the final minutes of Tennessee's game play out.

They needed a Titans loss to clinch the AFC South.

When time ran out on the Titans, preserving New Orleans' 22-17 victory, the Texans screamed, hugged, and donned black championship caps and white T-shirts. Injured receiver Andre Johnson, who didn't play because of a strained hamstring, got a game ball for his part in turning the team into a winner.

"Words really can't describe it," Johnson said. "It's something I've been waiting for for a long time."

LARRY DIERKER BIO:
In his first season as skipper of the Houston Astros, Larry Dierker guided his team to an 84-78 record, earning the team its first-ever National League Central division title and its first division title in 11 years. For his managerial efforts, Larry Dierker finished in third place behind San Francisco’s Dusty Baker and Pittsburgh’s Gene Lamont in the 1997 Manager of the Year balloting. Larry Dierker’s name has been associated with Major League Baseball in Houston almost since the inception of the club. A Los Angeles native who was an All-League baseball and basketball player at Taft (CA) High, he was courted by 17 other big league clubs before signing with the Houston Colt .45s in June of 1964. He made his major league debut in Colt Stadium on his 18th birthday (September 22, 1964) and struck out Willie Mays and Jim Hart in his first inning. Larry Dierker’s 14-year pitching career saw him become Houston’s first 20-game winner in 1969, the same year he pitched a club record 20 complete games. Dierker was named to the National League All-Star team for the 1969 game in RFK Stadium in Washington and the 1971 contest at Tiger Stadium in Detroit. He tossed the fifth no-hitter in franchise history on July 9, 1976 in the Astrodome against Montreal. After completing his career on the field in 1977, Larry Dierker directed the Group and Season Sales Office for the Astros. From 1979 until his appointment as manager, he had been the club’s principal color analyst on radio and television, in addition to making several network television appearances.

THE ROASTERS:

Jim Deshaies – former Astros pitcher and current color analyst on the telecast. In 2001, Deshaies ran a tongue-in-cheek campaign urging Baseball Writers Association of America voters to elect him to the Baseball Hall of Fame, even though he knew that he was not qualified for the honor. His goal was to get one vote in the Hall of Fame election, which succeeded when Houston Chronicle writer John Lopez voted for him.

Bill Brown - is a baseball announcer who has been with the Houston Astros since 1987. He is often called “Brownie” by his play by play partner Jim Deshaies. He has developed a reputation for being a solid broadcaster that often plays the part of the straight man to Deshaies’ humorous asides. Brown was inducted into the Texas Sports Hall of Fame on November 12. 2004.

Carroll Dawson – Dawson moved to the Rockets’ front office, becoming General Manager in 1996. Among his most notable accomplishments were his selection of Yao Ming in the 2002 NBA Draft and his seven-player trade to acquire NBA scoring champ Tracy McGrady in 2004.

Norm Miller – is a retired professional baseball who played outfielderin the Major Leagues from 1965 to 1974 for the Houston Astros andAtlanta Braves. Later in his career he served in the Astros’ front office. He is a current part time weekend host on SportsRadio 610.

Bill Worrell – one of the most recognizable faces in the Houston sports scene. His broadcasting career spans more than 35 years, all in the Houston market. Worrell has been the play-by-play voice of the Rockets since the 1986-87 season, and also served 20 seasons as an analyst on Houston Astros telecasts.

To make our information as consistent as possible, the Beverage Testing Institute uses a dedicated tasting lab in Chicago. Our Scoring

A basic tenet of qualitative evaluation is that the shorter the scale, the easier it is for tasters to repeat their scores — and repeatability is the essence of accuracy. Our tasters now use a simple scale with four bands. In the first round we use this range:

1--Not recommended (less than 80 points).

2--Of sound commercial quality, though not overly exciting (80-84).

3--Shows style and character, yet probably not of the highest merit (85-89).

4--Highest quality.

3--Very good, but not of the highest merit (88-89 points).

4--Truly excellent in style and distinction (90-92).

5--Outstanding, though not quite one of the world’s finest (93-95).

6--Provides a world-class experience (96-100).

This allows our tasters to consider general quality, without the distraction of adding points. Products breaking the critical 90-point barrier are tasted twice without exception, virtually guaranteeing that they will deserve their accolades. Also, after the first round, those with a wide disparity in score are re-tasted. We also re-taste many that scored poorly, to make sure a bad sample was not at fault.Scores and Their Meaning

The scores are then translated onto a modified 100-point scale. We think the five "bands" below more accurately reflect the quality of products in today’s market. It roughly corresponds to a five-star system:

In July, more than a year after he opened the roaming barbecue trailer in a yellow school bus, Parrott opened Old School Grill, a restaurant at 6301 W. Parmer Lane.

Parrott says that the downtown location will incorporate much of the menu of the restaurant, minus the dishes that have to be cooked on a saute line because the new location at 401 E. Sixth St. has a smaller kitchen.

In the upstairs space will be Austin Cotton Exchange, a live music venue that will feature music from “different genres on different days of the week,” Parrot says. The new restaurant will also feature the same cocktail and wine menus of Old School Grill.

“We want to bring a level of service to Sixth that you don’t typically get in a lot of places,” Parrott says. He plans on opening every day at 11 a.m. and closing at 2 a.m., with the menu changing as the crowd inevitably changes. “I know there’s lunch down there… and dinner is sitting there waiting. I know happy hour is, too,” he says. But after that, he plans to offer a reduced menu with dishes such as sliders for what he calls “drunk 30.” “From 10 p.m. on, it is what it is down there,” Parrott says of that section of Sixth Street between Congress and Interstate 35.

Both teams are off to fast starts in 1st place in their respective divisions. Statistically both teams are very impressive and balanced.

Both teams are great at running the football. Arian Foster and Ray Rice are two of the best backs in the game and they're both having awesome seasons.

The biggest question for the Ravens defense will be who covers Andre Johnson? Will they split the assignment amongst their DB's? They don't have one standout CB but rookie CB Jimmy Smith has made quite the early season impression. Teams have done a decent job in containing A. Johnson to this point but this has opened the door for TE Owen Daniels. He leads the team with 18 receptions 310 yards and 4 TD's.

The most alarming stat that either of the teams have is the Ravens pass defense. They rank 28th in the NFL allowing 265 passing YPG. Is this a result of the Ravens stout run defense(3rd in the NFL) or is the Ravens secondary vulnerable? Do teams just concede the fact that they can't run on Baltimore with? We could find that out this week.

Some of it is due to the higher amount of passing attempts like I previously mentioned, but 28th is still very bad for a team that is supposed to have an elite defense.

Foster rushed for 155 yards and scored the go-ahead touchdown after Johnson left with a hamstring injury, leading the Texans to a 17-10 win over the Pittsburgh Steelers on Sunday.

"I go into every contest thinking that I'm the go-to guy," Foster said. "When the flow of the game starts going, we need certain things, and you've got to be there for your team."

Johnson was back on the sideline late to watch Houston (3-1) finish off Ben Roethlisberger and the injury-plagued Steelers (2-2). Houston coach Gary Kubiak said Johnson would undergo tests Sunday night, so his status remained uncertain for next week's game against Oakland.

Texans owner Bob McNair told ESPN he was not "overly concerned" about the injury and would wait for test results before speculating on its impact.

"Now, if we have to go without him for a period," Kubiak said, "we're going to have to really ask some guys to step up to the plate."

The Steelers may have to do the same without their franchise quarterback.

Roethlisberger was beat up all day, sacked five times behind an offensive line missing two regular starters. The Steelers also lost running back Rashard Mendenhall (right hamstring), linebacker James Harrison (right eye) and defensive end Aaron Smith (foot sprain) during the game.

Roethlisberger played until the end, but he was wearing a protective boot on his left foot afterward. He wouldn't speculate on his availability for next week's game against Tennessee

The Texans suffered their first loss of the year as their see-saw battle with the New Orleans Saints came up just short and the now the AFC South leaders must rebound at home against the AFC powerhouse from Pittsburgh.

Texans defensive lineman Shaun Cody and Connor Barwin joined Vandermeer and Lopez and they discussed the loss to the saints and previewed the upcoming game versus the Steelers as well as their thoughts on Wade Phillips.

Every week, we’ll track Texans wide receiver Andre Johnson as he climbs the NFL all-time receptions and receiving yardage charts
in his ninth NFL season.

Through three games in 2011, Johnson has 21 catches for 316 yards. He now ranks 36th in NFL history in receptions (694) and 40th in receiving yards (9,480). The five-time Pro Bowler needs 73 receptions and 1,370 receiving yards to break into the top 25 all-time in both categories.

Gera Vodka and The Houston Texans 2-0 at The New Orleans Saints

Here are five things to watch as the Texans (2-0) take on the New Orleans Saints (1-1) at the Louisiana Superdome in Week 3. Kickoff is Sunday at noon CT.
1. No. 1 test: As litmus tests go, they don’t get much bigger than the one facing the Texans’ defense in Week 3. Houston has the league’s number one defense through two games under new coordinator Wade Phillips. New Orleans has had the league’s number one offense in three of the last five seasons under head coach Sean Payton.

Saints quarterback Drew Brees leads the league in passing yards, touchdowns and completion percentage since 2006. He has 689 yards, six touchdowns and zero interceptions in two games this season. Among the weapons at his disposal are running backs Pierre Thomas and Mark Ingram, who handle much of the work between the tackles, and Darren Sproles, a dynamic runner, receiver and returner.

Wide receiver Marques Colston is out with an injury, but the Saints still have a dangerous set of deep threats in Devery Henderson, Robert Meachem and Lance Moore, along with tight end Jimmy Graham. Their offensive line features two of the best guards in the game in Jahri Evans and Carl Nicks.

“I’m really looking forward to the challenge that this team brings, because it’s just a great team,” said Texans defensive end Antonio Smith, a second-year captain. “I can’t wait to see us go against them and us battle.”

2. Foster and/or Tate: In what has become a weekly game of wait-and-see, Arian Foster will be a game-time decision on Sunday. The 2010 rushing champ didn’t play in Week 1, the last time he was a game-time decision, but was able to practice on a limited basis this week on Thursday and Friday. The Texans will work him out Saturday and Sunday morning before determining his status.

If Foster can’t play, Ben Tate will make his first-career start. If he runs for more than 100 yards, Tate will join Cadillac Williams as the second player in NFL history to do so in his first three games. The second-year back out of Auburn had 116 yards in Week 1 and 103 in Week 2, making him one of 11 players in league history with 100 yards in his first two games.

Tate is third in the NFL with 219 rushing yards, 10 yards off the league lead. He’s averaging 4.8 yards per carry without having a single run longer than 18 yards. Derrick Ward is out this week with a sprained ankle, so Steve Slaton would be the Texans’ second running back after Tate. The Saints have only allowed 81.5 rushing yards per game this season, but they gave up 112.3 a game in 2010.

3. Blitzing away: Whether or not Foster plays, the Texans will look to establish their running game to avoid putting Matt Schaub in harm’s way.

Saints defensive coordinator Gregg Williams is notorious for blitzing from anywhere and everywhere. The Saints had six sacks against a banged-up Bears offensive line in a 30-13 victory in Week 2. Texans coach Gary Kubiak said that the best way to keep those aggressive blitzes at bay is to run the ball well on first and second down to avoid third-and-long situations.

The Texans have had no problem piling up rushing yards in their first two games. They rank fifth in the league with 152.5 rushing yards per game and second in time of possession, holding the ball for 35:25 per game. A mix of runs and short passes could be a crucial part of their game plan in Week 3.

4. Crescent City shootout?: The Texans will want to run the ball, but the two quarterbacks in this game sure can throw it. It wouldn’t be a shock to see aerial fireworks on display on Sunday in the Superdome.

Since 2008, Schaub ranks second in the NFL with 293.3 passing yards per game on the road. Since 2007, Brees ranks first in the league with 300.4 passing yards per game at home. Brees led the league in passing in 2008 with 5,069 yards, which was the second-most all-time. Schaub led the league in passing in 2009 with 4,770 yards, which was sixth-most all-time.

Schaub ranks fourth in NFL history with a 65.0 career completion percentage, right behind Brees at 65.3 percent. So far in 2011, Schaub leads the league in completions percentage (71.7) while Brees ranks seventh (67.4).

Schaub only has 450 passing yards so far this season, but he’s averaging a career-high 8.5 yards per attempt (Brees is at 8.0 through two games). Should the Texans need to rely on his his arm to move the ball, look out for a big day from Schaub and Andre Johnson.

5. Return factor: Both teams feature dynamic kick returners who could be the X-factor in a game that looks relatively even on paper.

Texans safety Danieal Manning has been a lightning rod every time he touches the ball on kickoff returns, ranking fourth in the league with a 41.7-yard average. Wide receiver Jacoby Jones, who’s questionable with a knee injury, ranks third with 25.4 yards per punt return. Sproles is sixth in kick return average (33.3) and fourth in punt return average (23.3) for the Saints.

Working in the Texans’ favor on kickoffs is their punter, Brett “The Hitman” Hartmann. The undrafted rookie from Central Michigan has consistently boomed the ball out of the end zone for touchbacks. Texans opponents’ average starting field position has been at the 19.2-yard line. The average starting field position for Saints opponents has been at the 27.3-yard line.

Saints punter Thomas Morstead has eight touchbacks on kickoffs, equal to Hartmann, but the ones he has left in play have been returned for an average of 42.4 yards. Hartmann’s have been returned for an average of 25.2 yards.

With the game on the line, five-time Pro Bowler Andre Johnson found himself covered by a reserve cornerback. The result was no contest, just like the one-sided series between the Houston Texans and Miami Dolphins.

Johnson badly beat Nolan Carroll for a 23-yard score Sunday that helped seal the Texans' 23-13 victory over their favorite foils.

Houston improved to 6-0 against Miami, in part because the Dolphins' sieve-like pass defense was no match for Johnson and Matt Schaub.

The Texans improved to 2-0 for the second year in a row. Last season they faded to 6-10, extending their streak of never making the playoffs.

"We've been here before in this situation," said Johnson, who is in his ninth season with Houston. "Our goal is to go 1-0 every week."

The Dolphins are 0-2 for the fifth time in the past six years, and perhaps it's just as well they're on the road for most of the next two months. They're 1-11 at home since late 2009.

"This stinks," receiver Brandon Marshall said. "We're trying to get things going in our stadium and our community, and you have to win at home to do that. It's frustrating. It's embarrassing."

With fan apathy on the rise the stadium was half empty, despite Miami native Johnson buying 170 tickets for family and friends. He uncharacteristically dropped a deep pass in the third quarter but more than made amends, finishing with seven catches for 93 yards."Andre made some great plays all day long," Schaub said. read more Huff

Chris Myers said that Sunday’s win over Miami wasn’t pretty and he was right. Matt Schaub was harrassed all afternoon. A rookie running back gained over 100 yards in his debut and the Texans blew almost all of a 13 point lead.

But the important thing is they didn’t lose. In fact, when the Dolphins were seizing momentum, the Texans responded with a forced turnover, a reheated ground game and a Schaub touchdown pass to Andre Johnson that sealed the deal.

Houston is now 2-0 for just the 3rd time ever. They have never been three games above. 500 at any point in their history. Next week presents the season’s toughest challenge in a fired up New Orleans team that turned away the Bears to go 1-1.

It’s refreshing to see the Texans defense making big plays after struggling to historic proportions last season. When Miami found success running in the third quarter, it felt like the day might slide out of control.

But not with these Texans. The culture on the defensive side of the ball is decidedly different. And special teams blocked a field goal (thank you, J.J. Watt), produced some booming punts (including Hartmann’s franchise record 69-yarder) and stayed pefect on field goals (Rackers is 5 for 5).

Concerns include run defense and, to a lesser extent, pass protection. But you get the feeling that everything is correctable and this bunch will learn their lessons while winning most of their games as opposed to attending the school of hard knocks. read more

Texans VS Dolphins! Week 2

Even without Arian Foster (notes), Houston made a major statement to the two-time defending AFC South champions in its season opener. With the possible return of the league’s reigning rushing leader, the Texans could become even more of a threat in Week 2.

That’s bad news for a Miami Dolphins team trying to rebound from one of the worst defensive performances in franchise history.

Houston looks to snap a six-game road losing streak and stay unbeaten against Miami on Sunday when the Dolphins try to end their woes at home.

In his first game as an outside linebacker in Wade Phillips' 3-4 defense, Mario Williams recorded two sacks and forced Colts quarterback Kerry Collins into an intentional grounding call.

"Throughout camp, there were questions about how he's adjusting to the linebacker position, and he steps up and has two sacks and three quarterback hurries," coach Gary Kubiak said. "Some of it was with his hand up (off the turf when the ball was snapped), some of it was with it down, and that's how he's going to play all year."

Healthy dose of Cushing

Inside linebacker Brian Cushing led the team with seven tackles and also had a hit on the quarterback.

"He played with great effort," coach Gary Kubiak said. "He played very well.

"The biggest thing with Cush right now is he's been on the field for practice every day. He's healthy, and it's showing up in his play."

Making his mark

Free safety Danieal Manning, who left Chicago to sign with the Texans as a free agent, had a 46-yard kickoff return and played well on defense.

"You've got a seasoned pro with a good young player in (strong safety) Glover Quin). You saw what Manning does for us in blitz packages, him coming on some schemes. He can get there very quickly.

"He's brought a lot of energy to our team. He's brought leadership to the back end."
